Nearly all healthy childhoods come with fond memories of tricycles. Tricycles are basically bicycles attached with an additional wheel to help beginning the cyclist condition themselves to riding the bicycle. It is commonly used by children and is normally decorated with a basket, ribbon spangles and a tinkling tricycle bell. It is also considered a rite of passage for a kid to have his or her support wheel taken off, as it is perceived that only grown ups ride on two wheel bikes.
Another Name for the Three Wheel Bikes
Adults also ride on them, except that they aren't usually called tricycles and they come with a fair bit of dignity associated with it. The rickshaw commonly used in Asian countries is a good example of a three wheel bicycles put to good use. The rickshaw is a business asset used by rickshaw drivers who transport people around on their three wheel bicycle that is attached to a seating compartment. As the third wheel provides better stability and generates more moving power, the rider can easily pedal a fair amount of distance despite the additional load.
Why Adults Ride Three Wheel Bicycles
Having said that, there are also some adults who ride on three wheel bicycles simply because they are unable to balance themselves on the two wheel bicycle. Some may already be proficient at balancing themselves on two wheels but psychologically feel much safer riding on three wheels instead. Basically, riding on three wheels is a personal preference and should not be associated with any negative assumptions.
Save the World, Ride a Bike
With the issue of global warming becoming an increasingly hot topic (pun intended), it's probably time that we reconsider other modes of transportation rather than putting all our hopes on the hybrid and electric car. Do consider getting a three wheel bicycle and equip it with a traveler's seating compartment complete with cushion and food for passenger comfort.
